Oscar Watch: How Heath Ledger and Slumdog Millionaire Might (Gasp!) Lose

Forget the guild awards. Forget the favorites. We're rounding up the theories—and starting some new ones—that say everything you think about Sunday's 81st Academy Awards is wrong.
Sorry about that in advance.
Why Slumdog Millionaire Won't Win Best Picture: It's 1999 again, Slumdog is Saving Private Ryan, The Reader is a Nazied-up Shakespeare in Love, and
Harvey Weinstein is Harvey Weinsten.
Why
Heath Ledger Won't Win Best Supporting Actor: Doubt is an actor's-actor movie, Philip Seymour Hoffman is an actor's actor, and actors cast the majority of votes.
Why
Kate Winslet Won't Win Best Actress: Same as above, except insert Meryl Streep's name in place of Hoffman's. Or, alternately, it's 1994 again, Winslet is Ralph Fiennes, and Streep is Tommy Lee Jones, saving the Academy from presenting an award to a Holocaust heavy.
Why
Sean Penn Won't Win Best Actor: Mickey Rourke is Robert De Niro; The Wrestler is his Raging Bull.
Why Mickey Rourke Won't Win Best Actor: Harvey Milk is Harvey Milk; Milk is his tribute; Sean Penn benefits by association.
Why Danny Boyle Won't Win Best Director: The DGA Award-Oscar connection has been less automatic this decade (diverging two out of nine times, to date) than any other decade outside of the DGA's beginnings in the 1940s. Plus, people think
David Fincher is cool.
Why Penélope Cruz Won't Win Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams has the bigger part and just might be gaining, while a noted election prognosticator's computer told him Taraji P. Henson has the best statistical chance.
Why WALL-E Won't Win Best Animated Feature: It's the Annie Awards again, and Kung-Fu Panda is the
surprise victor again.
Why Slumdog Won't Win Adapted Screenplay: Hmmm…that's a stumper.
Why Milk Won't Win Original Screenplay: An even bigger stumper. The other nominees in this category (WALL-E, Happy-Go-Lucky, Frozen River, In Bruges) failed to muster enough support for Writers Guild nominations.
Why The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Won't Win Best Visual Effects: Ditto what was said about the last two categories. Sometimes, a lock is a lock, and a
CGI Brad Pitt is unbeatable.
Why Slumdog Won't Win Best Sound Mixing: The sweep is out; The Dark Knight, at least one
oddsmaker's favorite in this category, is in; a measure of revenge is exacted.

SpiderMan4

it is being reported that J. K. Simmons will reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson, publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper, in the fourth Spider-Man movie. This comes after an announcement where Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi would be likely to return as well. Simmons said, with regards to playing Jameson again, “We’ve definitely brainstormed ideas for Triple-J, but I have no desire to make Triple-J more of the focus of those movies. The amount that I did in 1, 2 and 3 is just exactly right. Like, be the wolf. Come in, blow in, do a week, blow out, be the comic relief, and hit the road. And let Tobey and everybody else do the heavy lifting.” Kirsten Dunst is not yet confirmed to return as Mary Jane Watson, the love interest of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, but Dunst has previously been open to playing Mary Jane again provided everyone from the previous films were to return. Sony hopes to begin shooting for Spider-Man 4 in 2010 for a tentative May, 2011 release. Interestingly enough, that coincides with the same month that Paramount Pictures hopes to release Captain America: The First Avenger, another Marvel Comics mainstay. While Sony is producing the Spider-Man movie franchise, Marvel Studios is producing Captain America themselves. Currently, playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is serving as screenwriter of the movie after James Vanderbilt took the first stab at writing the superhero flick. Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the 1960s. Spider-Man 3 grossed $890.8 million in the worldwide box office.

pirates of the caribbean 4

The announcement that there was to be a fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” installment took no one by surprise. It was pretty much a given when Captain Jack Sparrow unrolled the map to the Fountain of Youth, and set off in pursuit of Captain Barbossa and the Black Pearl.
They may have to keep a weather eye on the horizon because if Bill Nighy has his way, Davy Jones will weigh anchor, and be sailing right behind them.
“I am technically dead but then again, who cares?” Nighy said to MTV News. “Everybody dies in the pirates movies. They killed Johnny [Depp] and Geoffrey [Rush]. Death is not permanent in the pirate world. I have a serious desire to come back.”
Nighy didn’t say whether he would like to return with or without Jones’ tentacles – but since he spent two films buried under CG effects, wouldn’t it be cool to see him without?
Casting buzz has been relatively scarce on the fourth Pirates, but a very persistent rumor has Russell Brand joining the Sparrow clan as Jack’s brother. We asked Nighy if there was any truth to the story, but the actor shrugged it off as rumor. “No, I didn’t hear that. I don’t think there’s any more news at this point other than that there will be another Pirates movie

BatMan3

Despite recent statements from The Dark Knight producer Chuck Roven that work on a sequel was limited to "talking and thinking" stage, apparently a script is indeed in the works. Citing an "extremely reliable source," ReelzChannel's Jeff Otto, representing IESB, went to Roven for confirmation, to which Roven replied: "The creative driver of the project at this point is Chris [Nolan]. There's really nothing more for me to say about that. When he feels that he's got something to talk about, then we'll be able to talk about it." Furthermore, Roven told Access Hollywood: "Chris Nolan is the guy who's had the vision of 'The Dark Knight' and this incarnation of Batman and we know that he's thinking about [it] -- if he can think all the way through what another one would be like. We'll know if he's gotten to the end of that process when he tells us." Perhaps Roven doesn't realize that IESB heard about the script from an "extremely reliable source." IESB claims they've "double-checked" and that the script is indeed happening. As usual, we remain cautious on Batman rumors until official word is released.

PRISONBREAK

Prison Break will end, for good, this Spring. FOX announced today that this, the fourth season of Prison Break, will be the series last. Prison Break will return to FOX for its final run of episodes on Friday, April 17. Details are scarce right now, and it's unclear whether Prison Break will finish off its run on Fridays, though that seems likely.

As FOX is wont to do, the final episodes will probably run without a break, starting in April and then airing the final six or seven episodes once a week until the finale. Though this may be disappointing news for fans of Prison Break, the mere fact that the show ran for four seasons is a remarkably impressive feat.

When Prison Break debuted, it appeared to be a one season and done type of show. The show is called Prison Break – what more was there to do after Michael and Lincoln broke out of prison. Mat Olkin and company, however, thickened the plot, layering the story with complicated conspiracies and an ever-increasing cast of characters. The show became a cult series and, while ratings were never terribly impressive, the fans Prison Break did have were as rabid as any on television.
